Backstory Interview Room

Why the middle of a date was a good time to be having this conversation, CR had no idea. But they were back in the backstory interview room, talking about CR’s time in the military.

“Tell me about your time overseas,” Belle prompted.

It was ridiculous that he would rather talk about sandwiches. But really, he did.

“What about it?”

“We need to build your backstory,” Belle said. “And you haven’t given us enough yet. So we’ll start with your time in the military. So, what was it like?”

This was going to be a shit show.

“Most of what I did when I was overseas is classified. There isn’t much I can tell you past what you already know.”

“But you can tell me where you were, right?” Belle prompted.

“I wasn’t in the States for most of my time,” CR replied.

Belle wasn’t going to be able to break him. She may have honed interrogation techniques on years of reality show contestants, but he had his past.

“Did you see anyone die?” Belle asked. So cheerful. Like death was just a magical spectacle that happened in movies.

“I was in active war zones for the better part of six years, Belle,” CR replied. “What do you think?”

Jennifer, who had decided that she also wanted to be part of this interview, leaned forward eagerly. “Who did you see die?”

He should have been used to the enthusiasm that came with that question. It wasn’t like Jennifer was the first one to ask him.

But it still grated.

“Who didn’t I see die is probably a more accurate question,” he replied.

Bethany sighed dramatically. Apparently him talking about his experience in the military was more exciting than sandwich making, considering the audience he had.

He hated all of this. So much.

“You were so brave,” Bethany gushed. “So selfless, going to protect our country from terrorists.”

“Most of what I did was working with civilians,” CR replied. “Who weren’t terrorists, and probably would have been a lot better off if we hadn’t shown up in their country in the first place. Hell, if white people had just fucking left them all alone, let them run their country the way they wanted to, I wouldn’t have had to watch nearly so many people die.”

Jennifer reared back. “But patriotism—” she began.

Damn, CR really wished they were talking about the sandwich contest instead. “Is a misguided term that people like to use to make themselves feel better about what they’ve done. Sure, there are people there who did good. There are things the military has done that have helped. But in general, a group of men with machine guns aren’t really going to be the harbingers of peace.”

Bethany looked horrified. “Do you hate this country?”

“Did I give any indication that I do?” CR countered.

“Well,” Jennifer pointed out. “You’re sitting here disrespecting our veterans.”

CR raised an eyebrow slowly. “Jennifer, I am a veteran.” He stood up, unclipping his mic. “Belle, I’m going to grab some coffee. I’ll be back in fifteen.”

“There’s coffee on the back table,” Belle said.

“I know,” CR said.
